Physical therapy is the practice of soft tissue and joint manipulation techniques to release tension in the muscles and joints. Physical therapy consists of joint/soft tissue mobilization, massage, and exercise as well as modalities of ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and application of heat and ice. Physical therapists are health care professionals who have graduated from college with a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree of science in physical therapy. Physical therapists are required to pass a national examination and are licensed by the state in which they practice. They are experts in body movement and function and provide help for every part of the human body. Physical therapy can benefit everyone from infants to the elderly.
A typical session is one hour of hands-on treatment by a physical therapist. The types of bodywork that may be done are massage, myofascial release, soft tissue and joint mobilization, craniosacral and visceral mobilization, lymph drainage, manual stretching, and exercise. Modalities of ultrasound, biofeedback, heat/cold, and electrical stimulation may be applied.
Traditional chiropractic care focuses on high velocity, low amplitude thrust manipulation where you hear a pop or crack. Physical therapy rarely uses this method, choosing instead, low velocity soft tissue and joint mobilization techniques to release tension in the muscles and joints.

The Oregon Physical Therapy Licensing Board does not require us to have orders to evaluate or treat a patient. Some insurance companies do require a physician’s order; please check with yours. Traditional Medicare requires an order from a medical provider, and it cannot be from a dentist.
Absolutely! Before discharging a patient from physical therapy, we educate in self-care techniques that can be used in circumstances throughout life. We teach how to move your body to promote optimal ease and functions in the activities of everyday living. We teach muscle trigger point and massage skills. Most valuable, according to our patients, are the relaxation skills learned that can be applied in a variety of life's stressful situations.
